Voon Kim Cheong born in 1968 is from Kuala Lumpur. He has a deep sense of vision and energy that reveals his purposeful movements of strokes in his works. Graduated from the Saito Academy, his images dancing on canvas are brought to live in his Vibrancy series. Strongly inspired by Malaysia’s different cultural elements of performers and their instruments, his work depicts the energetic charms of pulsating drums, drummers, dragon boat racing, dancers and children playing games. Emotions are high and movements are significantly portrayed in the spirit of unity, joy, strength, courage, harmony and energy set in multicultural environments. Voon tries to communicate these issues of identity of a multicultural country to the understanding and respectful harmony of races and cultures. Swift flowing strokes and a vibrant mix of colors are beguiling of Voon’s works. His work pulsates and excites in its abstracted form of figures whilst a discerning eye captures the movements evidenced by his masterful strokes of execution. Voon has gone full-time as an artist and is giving art classes on a freelance basis.
